The Most Common Comparison We Hear
When a mid-size B2B company starts evaluating ERP systems, two names come up most often: Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and SAP Business One. Both target the same market segment — companies that have outgrown simple accounting software but do not need (or cannot afford) the complexity of SAP S/4HANA or Oracle ERP.
We are a Business Central consultancy, so our perspective is not neutral. But we work in a competitive market and have lost deals to SAP B1 vendors. What follows is our honest read of both systems — where each is strong, where each has limits, and how to think about the choice.
At a Glance
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is built on Microsoft's technology stack and integrates natively with the products most businesses already use: Office 365, Teams, Outlook, Power BI, Power Automate. It is cloud-first (SaaS via Microsoft Azure), regularly updated, and extensible through AL extensions published to Microsoft AppSource.
SAP Business One is SAP's offering for small and mid-size companies. It has been around since the early 2000s and has a large installed base, particularly in manufacturing, distribution, and wholesale. It is available in both cloud (SAP Business One Cloud, hosted by partners) and on-premise deployments.
Where Business Central Is Stronger
Microsoft Ecosystem Integration
If your business runs on Microsoft — and most do — Business Central fits naturally. Posting an invoice from Outlook, pulling financial reports into Excel with a live connection, building Power BI dashboards on top of BC data, triggering automated workflows in Power Automate: these are seamless. There is no middleware, no data export. They are the same platform.
SAP Business One integrates with Office products too, but the integration is not native. It requires connectors and additional configuration, and the experience is noticeably clunkier.
Customisation Flexibility
Business Central's AL extension model is powerful and developer-friendly. If standard BC functionality does not cover something you need, a developer can build an extension that behaves exactly like native functionality — accessing the same tables, posting to the same ledgers, appearing in the same interfaces. AppSource has hundreds of pre-built extensions for common vertical requirements.
SAP B1 customisation relies on the SDK and add-ons published through the SAP Partner ecosystem. It is mature and capable, but the development experience is more constrained, and there are fewer pre-built extensions available in markets outside Germany and the US.
Cloud Delivery and Updates
Business Central Online is a true SaaS product. Microsoft manages the infrastructure, delivers two major update waves per year, and includes the latest AI-assisted features (Copilot in BC, for example) automatically. You pay a per-user subscription and do not manage servers.
SAP Business One Cloud is typically hosted by a reseller partner on their own infrastructure, not by SAP directly. Update cycles and uptime guarantees vary by partner. This is an important distinction — not all "cloud" is equal.
Reporting and Analytics
Power BI integration is a genuine differentiator. BC ships with pre-built Power BI apps for finance, sales, and inventory. Building custom reports and dashboards requires no data warehouse or ETL pipeline — Power BI connects directly to BC's APIs. For companies that value self-service analytics, this is hard to match.
SAP B1 has the Crystal Reports engine built in, which is capable but dated. Modern BI integration requires additional setup and typically a separate licence for SAP Analytics Cloud.
Where SAP Business One Is Stronger
Manufacturing and Production
SAP B1 has historically been stronger in production planning, bill of materials management, and manufacturing resource planning (MRP). Its production order management is more mature out of the box for companies with complex production workflows.
Business Central has solid manufacturing capabilities — especially in more recent releases — but companies with sophisticated production environments often find they need more BC customisation to match what B1 delivers natively.
Established Partner Network in Certain Markets
In some regions and verticals, SAP B1 simply has a deeper network of local implementation partners with domain expertise. If you are in a country or industry where B1 partners are numerous and experienced, you may find better local support options.
Longevity of the Product
SAP B1 has been deployed in over 70,000 companies globally. It has a long track record and a large user community. For some companies, this installed base and history provides reassurance.
Where Both Have Limits
Neither Business Central nor SAP Business One is a good fit for very large enterprise requirements — complex multi-entity structures across dozens of legal entities, highly regulated industries with strict audit trail requirements, or globally distributed manufacturing operations at scale. Both are mid-market products.
Both also require a serious implementation partner. Neither system is plug-and-play. Budget for implementation services alongside licence costs.
How to Make the Decision
Ignore the vendor demos. Both systems demo well. The questions that matter are:

What does your existing Microsoft stack look like? If you are an Office 365 shop with Teams and Power BI already in use, Business Central's integration story is very compelling.

How complex are your production and manufacturing processes? If you have multi-level bills of materials, complex routing, and sophisticated MRP requirements, ask both vendors to show you those specific workflows — not their standard demos.

Who are the local partners? Implementation quality depends more on the partner than the software. Talk to references from actual implementations, not showcases.

What is the five-year total cost? Include licences, implementation, customisation, training, and annual support. Cloud subscriptions feel cheaper per month but add up — model the full picture.

What is your growth trajectory? BC scales comfortably to mid-enterprise. If you are planning acquisitions or multi-country expansion, check both systems' multi-entity and multi-currency capabilities carefully.

We implement Business Central. We believe it is the right choice for most mid-size B2B companies in Turkey and internationally — particularly those embedded in the Microsoft ecosystem, those needing strong customisation capabilities, and those wanting a cloud-first platform with a clear roadmap.
